Thank you for the deep dive into the issue of consent. I agree. How can a person regardless of gender or sexual orientation, give consent when they don’t even know what they want?
You ask the right questions and target the right problems - those of inequality, coercion, and unconscious pressures that take away the true meaning of consent.
I’m glad you brought in the topic of sexual violence and harassment in the workplace. And I love that you pointed to harder-won solutions: “reducing oppression and inequality, addressing racism, addressing culture, and less gaslighting of women and giving them more social power.” I greatly appreciated your deep dive!
There's an essay I linked to in this one that's just about workplace harassment & assault (which is what I work against professionally), if that's something you're interested in.
The hard answer is the one people avoid, thanks for reading & sharing.
It makes sense to think consent is at least partly a con. We’ve been woven for centuries into these vast experiences of being trapped and traded, paraded, feared and hated. We have accepted a world where the vast majority of infants with a penis are cut in this most vulnerable, sensitive part of their bodies, days old. There is no way this doesn’t sever trust in mother/women. Additionally and related, until we as a whole world stabilize the material needs of all people, in line with what the Earth is able to provide, and offer us each the opportunity to create solutions for our individual lives based on our unique combinations of commonly held energetic patterns, I don’t think we will be free from the power-over thinking that exists, whether consciously or unconsciously, in matters requiring vast vulnerability, such as sexual consent. Thank you for the opportunity to ponder this issue through the information you’ve shared. I continue to look forward to the day when all our combined knowledge will bring forth a break through that will free us all.
This is such a powerful piece and a fantastic collection of experiences and resources, thank you so much for sharing it. As someone who has made a good portion of this my career (more in mission and lens than in direct strategy), I’ve seen this come up often. It’s one of the reasons I focus on consent in storytelling as a tool for teaching empathy as well as all the other kink and sex education. Consent education means nothing without it.
This was a very powerful read. If I'm honest this isn't a topic I normally would dive in. However, I'm grateful for coming across this because it opened my eyes on something that I was blind to. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and insights.

People give and take consent inaccurately, which is part of the risk of sexual engagement. Assault and abuse aren't rooted in that inaccuracy.
Thanks for reading!
